Church History

Front of church picture 1.jpg

During the 1870's, Prayer meetings and Sunday Schools were held in a log cabin near the intersections of State Roads 1140 and 1132. Prospect Baptist Church was organized in August 1878. Reverend Robert Broadnax served, preached and guided the group in the early seventies.

Reverend C. L. King was elected Pastor in 1878 and he served until 1895. The membership increased during his leadership at Prospect. The congregation purchased a quarter of an acre of land on the Ferry Road (site of the first church where house number 260 Ferry Road is located today). Two log church buildings were built under his leadership.

Reverend Lemon Colemon, Brothers Randolph Price, Jewell Averett, Ben Studderfield, Henry Love, Robert Ross, and Sister Jane Price were founders of the church.

In 1896 Reverend Paul Monroe was elected Pastor. He was an Evangelist and an administrator. A new building of weatherboard was constructed and new pews were purchased. Brother Robert Bethel recommended to organize a choir on July 26, 1912. Charter members were Sisters M. L. Hooper, M. F. Nelson, Dora Hall, Callile Pritchett, Bessie Ferguson, E. G. Hooper, Lora Morrell, Annie Wilson, Brothers, George W. Adams, John J. Price, T. Massie Adams, W. R. Bethel, and Columbus Price. Brother Walter S. Nash was choir master.
Prospect was one of the nineteen churches that organized the Cherrystone Association. It was a leader in Missionary work, local and state.

Reverend Arthur Younger was elected Pastor in 1916 and he served until 1920. He was an excellent leader. The church prospered and grew in membership. He was called to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1920 to continue his work.  Reverend Thomas Banks served as Pastor from 1920 until 1923. He served well until his health began to fail. Reverend Paul Monroe returned as Pastor from 1923 until 1928.

The church continue to progress under his leadership. Reverend William Abbott served as Pastor from 1928 until 1938. He was a Gospel Preacher and a faithful leader. These were the depression years and the beginning of World War II in Europe. During his tenure the church made building improvements. Under the supervision of Deacon T. M. Adams, a new choir stand, vestibule, siding boards and electric lights were installed for the first time on the Ferry Road Church. Times were hard, money was scarce, but Jesus lead us through it all.
Reverend Howard L. Ferguson served as Pastor from 1938 until 1961. He was a dedicated leader for the church. The church purchased 10 acres of land from Albert Hodnett on State Road 1132. In November 1952 the church building was dedicated. Shortly thereafter regular services were held on the second and fourth Sundays, morning and evenings. During this time the Junior Choir was organized by Brother W. Robert Bethel.

Reverend David Wiley served as Pastor from 1961 until 1970. An eloquent speaker and a good leader the following took place:
1. Annual Calendar

2. Missionary Society (Divided into three circles)

3. Tithing enlistment program

4. Finance System (Unified Plan)

5. Every Sunday Service

6. Ladies and Male Chorus organized

7. The church improved its participation with the Baptist General Convention of Virginia.

Reverend Demetrius Crews was elected Pastor in 1970. He was a Gospel Preacher and a diligent worker in all areas of the church. The following things were initiated:
1. Young People's Choir organized

2. Senior Citizens Group organized

3. Bus Ministry

4. Boy Scouts

5. Men's Fellowship

6. All Choirs-Organized Music Department

7. Church purchased second organ

8. Food Bank

9. Senior Citizen's Choir

10. Lil Folk's Choir

11. Church purchased land and the Outreach Building across the street.

12. Gained 501 C3 and LLC status

13. Installed Steeple

14. Church purchased new dining tables and chairs/new choir chairs.

After 48 years of service Pastor Crews retired in December 2018.  Reverend Everett Dickerson was called as an Interim Pastor from July 2019 until May 2021. Our current Pastor Reverend Harry Lee Williams was called to serve in June 2021.  We honor the memory of our past members who God has called to eternal rest for their Labor and Dedication.  A major renovation was done to the building in 1984. The top of the building was totally removed and a new top was installed. An addition was added to the building which provided needed office space and a Dining Area. The parking lot was also paved.  As we celebrate this 143" Anniversary we are reminded of the great song of the Church, We Come This Far By Faith, Leaning On The Lord, Trusting In His Holy Word, He Never Failed Us Yet.
